Workshop: Making Space for Nature

Part of the Lessons from Lockdown Workshop Series. Read testimonials here.

The great lockdown of 2020 forced us inside and inseparable from our devices.

But for many, it also helped us appreciate the importance of nature and getting outdoors - and the benefits it has on our mental health.

So how can we make sure to give our bodies and minds the time they need in nature - and to even use our devices to get closer to it?

workshops & activities

Hosted by Rich Goddard, Performance Coach and Founder at Monday State of Mind; and Steve Mowat, Founder at Naturebytes - the digital community connecting adults, kids and families with nature.

Option 1: Interactive Workshop

Some people have greater access to nature than others. But wherever you are, once you get outside, you’ll find it…and it can blow your mind in fascination - and calm your mind in serenity.

This interactive workshop gets people to think personally about their local area, living situation and work schedule - and how they can make the most of it. Including:

  • The science and benefits of nature on mental health

  • How to find and make time for nature in 21st century urban life

  • Using tech to be mindful in nature - and better understand your local environment

  • Creating habits to make sure your body and mind gets what it needs

Online workshop lasts 45 minutes + Q&A, providing participants with tools and ideas to take into their daily lives.

Option 2: Week-long activity programme

For mental health awareness week, we’ve created a week-long programme of activities to get people out into their local environment.

The activities are inclusive, educational and designed to ensure that everybody - no matter their local area or living condition - can enjoy the benefits of nature, on a lunch break, or before or after work.

Full programme includes:

  • Introductory workshop: teaching the importance of connecting with nature in a digital world (to be held Thursday/Friday before MHAW)

  • Daily activity email: Each day, participants receive 3 activities to choose from - which can require the latest apps for reconnecting with nature, or simple mindfulness activities requiring just themselves! Activities include:

    • One nature-based activity (eg identifying species)

    • One creative activity (eg drawing)

    • One mindfulness activity (eg engaging the senses in nature)

  • Guidance to set up sharing platform: for teams to share their findings and enjoy together (using company’s preferred channel or platform, eg Slack, Yammer etc).

  • Final online "show and tell" session: With expert input and feedback from Steve, plus reflection on mental health and moving forward with Rich.
